A Sombra das Ondas
2023

A performance that explores the theme of transformation through the distinctive lens of a blind dancer.

"A Sombra das Ondas" is a computational dance performance that explores the theme of transformation through the distinctive lens of a blind dancer. This unique perspective invites the audience to experience transformation not just visually, but through a sensible translation of movement into sound.

Long, cyclical or sudden changes resonate in the natural world as well as in our personal physical, cognitive, and emotional states. These elements were investigated through experiments in dancing with nature, enriched by personal and biographical narratives that reflect the dance’s unique sensory interpretations. The creation of the piece evolved through group discussions between the dancer and collaborating artists, exploring the forces that shape transformation in the absence of sight.

At the heart of the performance is an interactive sound system that bridges movement and music, transforming the dance into an auditory space. As the dancer moves, her gestures are captured in real-time by a depth sensor, analyzed by computer vision and translated into soundscapes that themselves metamorphose throughout the performance. This integration not only offers an aesthetic experience tailored to a blind perspective as it enables alternative sensory explorations towards inclusive and diverse evolution with nature and human experience.

"A Sombra das Ondas" invites the audience to redefine sensory boundaries, to participate in a profound journey of change and perception that questions and expands the readings of dance and performance art.
