Hugo Marmelada


Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1987. Started dancing hip hop at the age of 11 years old joining, 3 years later, the Academy of Contemporary Dance of Setúbal, where he finished his studies in 2006. Since then he has been working with many different dance companies and choreographers such as Compagnie Alias, Amanda Miller, André Mesquita, Kamuyot project of Ohad Naharin in Sweden, Itamar Serussi, Bounce Streetdance Company, ODE 2010 with Fredrik “Benke” Rydman and Jo Stromgren, Christopher Arouni, Company It Dansa where he performed pieces of Ohad Naharin, Jirí Kylián, Rafael Bonachela, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Alexander Ekman and Catherine Allard, Company Carte Blanche where he performed pieces of Hooman Sharifi, Sharon Eyal, Crystal Pite, Sang Jijia, Ina Christel Johannessen, Marcos Morau, Siri Jontvedt and Senelle Hall, Lina Majdalanie, Mia Habib and Marcelo Evelin, ODE 2016 with Ole Martin, Karl-Erik Nedregaard and Knut Flatner, Norwegian National Ballet participating in the creation of Hege Haagenrud, Ariadna Montfort and Panta Rei Danseteater. 

In 2017, he was invited to join Batsheva Dance Company where he danced for 2 years, performing the pieces of Ohad Naharin “Venezuela”, “Last Work”,  “Hora”, “Mamootot” and “The Hole”. Also participated in the creation of Marlene Monteiro Freitas, “Canine Jaunâtre 3”, for the company. 

Most recently, 2019/22, Hugo worked with the choreographer Ina Christel Johannessen for her newest creation “When Monday Came”, worked with the choreographer Pedro Ramos for his performance in the florest "Corpo Anímico" and the choreographers Sofia Dias e Vítor Roriz for the Opera "Orphée".

Parallel to his dancing career, Hugo has been choreographing since 2010, for the project “Kamuyot Creates” the duet “I I” presented at Riksteatern in Stockholm, Sweden, solo “Stepping over stones” presented at the 16th International Solo-Dance-Theatre Festival Stuttgart, Germany, winning the awards for 2nd Best Performance and Audience Award being invited to tour in Germany and in Brazil, “Connect” and “Still, you can't smile with me” presented at the event Batsheva Dancers Create, and co-choreographed with Jens Trinidad “Flux ” presented at Dansens Hus in Oslo and “As it is/ As it turns out” presented at Baerum Kulturhus, Norway. In 2021, he created 2 new works, “Now I know, I really don’t know” presented at Mono Lisboa and “Podium” created for CAMADA-Centro Coreográfico, having premiered at Teatro Das Figuras in Faro, Portugal. 

Hugo has been teaching many dance classes in many different countries, dance schools, universities and dance companies such as Carte Blanche, It Dansa, Academy of Dance of Jerusalem, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Proda-Professional Danse Trainning of Norway, Scottish Dance Theater. He is currently an official Gaga teacher.
Competed in many battles of hip hop dance, house dance and experimental, having won, for example, in 2012 Scandinavias biggest streetdance battle in Stockholm, getting qualified for the finals in Paris of Juste Debout.


Hugo is now again freelancing, teaching, performing and choreographing based in Portugal.
